Companion Animal

Check out our range of small animal services

Portland House Veterinary Group has practices in Retford and Ollerton for companion animals and both these practices offer weekday surgeries and a 24-hour emergency facility.

Our team of experienced and skilled vets and nurses offer a great range of knowledge across a broad area of problems. Although most of our work is covered in-house we have an excellent network of specialist referral facilities should the need arise. As well as offering consultations for specific problems we encourage regular health and advice checks. This is usually covered annually when the pet comes for booster vaccinations.

At Portland House Veterinary Group we also offer Pet Health Club memberships which offer a convenient and structured plan, tailored to your pet’s health. The plan can be paid for monthly and covers the expected, routine treatments your pet needs throughout the year, including parasite prevention.

Consultations (by appointment only)

All trips to the vet start with a consultation. At Portland House, our consultations are by appointment only for routine appointments. Our vets offer a breadth of experience and skills to deal with any problems your pet may be experiencing. Consultations are the opportunity for us to give your pet a full health check and screen and pick up any potential problems early.

Our vets are happy to answer any questions you may have regarding your pet during your consultation. If you should wish to see a particular vet, please request them when you book your appointment and we will do our best to arrange this for you.

Annual Booster consultations include a full health check and provide the opportunity to discuss any ongoing health concerns with the vet.

Home Visits

Home visits can be arranged, but we believe it is in your pet’s best interests to bring them into the surgery to receive immediate treatment if at all possible. It is unfortunate that we are unable to provide an ambulance service to and from the practice but we can assist in alternative arrangements.

Out of Hours

We are very proud to be one of the only practices in the area to offer our own in-house 24-hour emergency service. This is run out of the Retford Surgery and is for the use of Portland House clients only. Please use this service for genuine emergencies only. In exceptional circumstances and at the veterinary surgeon’s discretion we may agree to see non-clients where the animal’s welfare is a concern and travelling to your own out of hours would put them at risk.

Please call 01777 703663 in case of an emergency.

Repeat Prescriptions

Repeat and written prescriptions are available on request. Please allow at least 2 working days’ notice so that your request can be processed and authorised by a veterinary surgeon. We are required to see your pet at least once every 6 months to continue to prescribe medications. However, please be aware that this is at the overseeing vet’s discretion and we may request to see your pet more frequently than this depending on their individual circumstances. Medicine check consultations are charged at a reduced fee.

Repeat Prescriptions can be ordered by contacting the practice or by completing our Repeat Prescriptions form.

Microchipping

On 6th April 2016, it became a legal requirement that all puppies and dogs must be microchipped and registered to an approved database by the time they are 8 weeks old to comply with the law. There is no requirement for cats but we highly recommend microchipping your feline friends to help locate them if they become lost. We can microchip your pet today for just £20.00.

Pet Passports

Thinking of taking your pet abroad? We can help you arrange this either through the (Pets Travel Scheme (PETS) or by assisting in export certification. You are responsible for ensuring your pet meets the requirements for (re-)entering the UK. These regulations are very strict and failure to meet the needs of the scheme could prove very costly with your pet being declined re-entry into the UK and them being forced into quarantine. You can contact us at the practice to find out more.

Requirements

  • ID chip
  • Rabies Vaccination – after microchip
  • Entry/re-entry into the UK 21+ days after primary vaccination
  • A correctly completed passport
  • Tapeworm treatment – MUST be performed by a veterinary surgeon 1-5 days before travel/checking in with an approved carrier.

If you are considering travelling with your pet to or from a non-EU/third country then the requirements for travel become more complicated. We recommend organising this through a third party company specialising in this and we can liaise with them to make the process as painless as possible!
