Alan Tevendale BVM&S MRCVS

Alan joined the practice after graduating from Edinburgh University in 2005. He became a partner in 2010, and then Clinical Director in 2017.  His main interests are in small animal surgery, particularly wound healing, farm herd health planning and zoo medicine.  Alan carries out work for several local authorities licensing boarding kennels, dog breeding establishments and licensing keeping exotic animals. He is a member of the British Cattle Veterinary Association, the Pig Veterinary Society, the Veterinary Wound Healing association and the British Veterinary Zoological Society.In his spare time Alan enjoys spending time with his family and watching rugby. 

Alison Burns BVMS Bsc MRCVS

Alison graduated from Murdoch University, Australia in 1981, before joining Portland House in 1983. She became a Partner in the practice in 1996, and Clinical Director in 2017. Alison worked mainly with large animals until 2000, but after a hip replacement now concentrates more on management, especially after Jim's retirement! Her main interests are still dairy fertility, mastitis and herd health, and zoo animal medicine. With the little free time she has out of work, Alison enjoys travelling, dog walking and pilates.

Michael Rothwell MA (Hons) VetMB MRCVS

Mike graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2011 with degrees in Veterinary Medicine and Biological Anthropology. He joined the practice shortly after qualifying and enjoys the variation working in a mixed practice brings. Mike has a keen interest in small animal internal medicine and diagnostic imaging. He also forms part of the zoo species team and has a particular interest in primates. In his spare time, Mike enjoys CrossFit and obstacle course racing and is also a keen amateur landscape artist. Mike is also Small Animal Clinical Director at the Practice. 

Andrew Chadwick BVSc MRCVS

Andy joined the practice as a new graduate in 1999, after qualifying from Liverpool Vet School. He left in 2002 and worked in a number of mixed and small animal positions before returning to Portland House in 2005. He has always, and still does, enjoy the variety and challenge of mixed veterinary practice with particular interests in dairy fertility, feline medicine and emergency procedures. 

Becky Tevendale MA VetMB MRCVS

Becky graduated from the university of Cambridge in 2008.  Her main interests are small animal surgery, ophthalmology and large animal fertility.In her spare time Becky enjoys walking her dogs and running around after two small toddlers. 

Alexandra Evans BVSc MRCVS

Alex graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2015 and started work at Portland House Veterinary Group a couple of weeks later. Her main interests include small animal internal medicine, large animal surgery and reproductive medicine. Most recently Alex has set up our new bull fertility services. Outside of work she enjoys baking and walks with her dog Charlie. 

Janet Aitken BVMS MRCVS

Janet Aitken BVMS MRCVS After graduating from Glasgow University, Janet worked at Portland House for 4 years before leaving to undertake voluntary veterinary work abroad.   Prior to her return to Portland House in 2004, she spent time doing locum work in a variety of practices in the UK followed by several years in a small animal practice in Nottingham. Janet works as a purely small animal vet, on a part time basis. Her main interests lie with small animal medicine and in 2014 she studied for and achieved the General Practitioners' Certificate in Small Animal Medicine. 

Clair Caudwell BVM&S MRCVS

Clair graduated from the Dick Vet in Edinburgh in 1993. After a few months as a locum she joined Portland house in 1994 intending to obtain a broad base of experience for a couple of years! Life intervened and she's still here 25 years later! Clair has concentrated on small animals for the last 18 years and in 2017 she achieved a distinction in the BSAVA Post Graduate Certificate in Small Animal Medicine. Clair enjoys soft tissue surgery and dentistry.

She lives with her two teenagers and a menagerie! Outside work Clair enjoys Pilates, dog walking and teaching Scottish Country Dancing.

Will McKnight BSc BVSc MRCVS

Will graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2019, and joined the team in July 2019 having spend some time as a student with us. He enjoys all aspect of mixed practice, especially large and small animal surgery. Originally from Staffordshire, Will enjoys being outdoors in the countryside, and in his spare time he enjoys fishing, clay pigeon shooting, horse racing and watching rugby.

Lindsay Harrison BVMS MRCVS, Head of Equine Department

Lindsay graduated from Glasgow University in 2000 and has come to Portland House Equine via short spells in New Zealand and Lincolnshire followed by thirteen years in North Yorkshire. Her clinical interests include dentistry and geriatrics.  
In her limited spare time she enjoys the adrenaline rush of team-chasing, and often has a young horse in to break in. She tries to find time to fit in some running, although it is certainly a challenge fitting everything in around veterinary work. She lives locally with her husband, dogs and horses. 


Oana qualified from Bucharest University in Romania in 2011 and has since worked in Romania, The Netherlands and Sweden. Oana's interests lie primarily in lameness and diagnostic imaging, and in her spare time she enjoys travelling, riding and photography.

Julie Forrest RVN (Head Nurse)

Julie started her nursing career in 1994 and qualified as a RVN in 1997 before joining Portland House in 1999. She holds a nursing certificate in anaesthesia and critical care. She is also the clinical coach for our student nurses. 

Ellen Smith RVN (Deputy Head Nurse)

Ellen qualified in 2014 from Bottle Green Training, East Midlands. She has worked in the practice since 2010 starting as a volunteer kennel assistant. She enjoys all aspects of nursing but has a particular interest in geriatric care.

Kelly Worner RVN C&G CertVNES

Kelly joined the team in 2006 and qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2010. Her clinical interests include nursing exotic species and canine and feline nutrition. Outside of work she can be found either pounding the pavements running or at the gym. Kelly also likes spending time with her two cats; Misty and Dawson and Bearded Dragons; Fred and George.

Katie Meads BSc (Hons) RVN

Katie completed a degree in Animal Behaviour Science before joining the practice in 2013. She has a keen interest in animal behaviour counselling, especially canine problem behaviours. In her spare time Katie enjoys hobbies in arts and crafts. Katie offers behavioural consultations by arrangement.

Carla Musgrove RVN

Carla joined the practice in April 2016 and qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2019. She has a keen interest in horses and is hoping to further her studies in Equine veterinary nursing and follow this passion.

Connie Wilkinson SVN

Connie joined the practice in September 2016 and is in her third year of training towards her veterinary nursing diploma. After working in other sectors, she has found that her true passion lies in animal health and welfare. 

Gemma Bilby SVN

Gemma joined the practice in June 2017 and is in her first year of training towards her veterinary nursing diploma. She has a keen interest in all aspects of nursing both with small and large animals. Gemma has Weimaraner dog called George and in her spare time enjoys going for walks and baking!

Niamh O'Donnell SVN

Niamh's passion for animals prompted a career change and she joined the practice in September 2019 to begin her veterinary nurse training. She has a keen interest in all aspects of nursing and in her spare time enjoys walking her Bedlington whippet dog Lola.

Heather Upton - Practice Manager

Heather joined the Portland House team in March 2019. Upon graduation Heather pursued a career in banking before moving to the education sector and most recently the NHS. Heather is delighted to now be working in an environment she is truly passionate about - she is a keen horse rider and all round animal lover. In her spare time she enjoys going to CrossFit and keeping fit.

Judith Wilkins

Judith has worked here since 1982 and has seen many changes in the practice in this time and a few stories to tell. She is one of our reception team and has a golden labrador called April.

Jan Phillips

Jan joined the practice in 2013 as part of the reception team. When she's not at work you will find Jan and her husband tending their allotment or walking their Parson's terrier Kai.

Jane Goodchild

Jane has been with the practice for many years first as a nurse and now as one of the reception team. When not at work, Jane plays rounders, netball and hockey and often does the parkrun at Clumber Park with her dog, Dotty in tow. 

Elaine Newbert

Elaine joined the practice in 1987 as a nurse but is now part of the reception team part-time. She is into everything horsey and enjoys chasing after her Hungarian Viszla Harley and Jack Russell terriers, Beetle and Mole.

Jane Bratton – Accounts clerk

Jane has been at Portland house since 2005 as our accounts clerk. Jane has four cats; Chaz, Rosie, Fluffy and Billy.

Tracy Smith

Tracy, our ever cheerful cleaner, has been at the practice for many years and thankfully keeps us all in ship shape. She can often be found also keeping Ginny, the practice border collie, out of trouble! 


Ginny is the practice border collie who belongs to Alison, one of the Clinical Directors. She is 7 years old and loves going for walks and playing fetch! When Ginny is not out on a walk she can be found at the practice visiting the staff and getting lots of cuddles and treats!
